Perfectionism
What is Perfectionism?
Perfectionism, while distinct from OCD, can present similarly to OCD in many ways. In both conditions a person may struggle with avoidance, repetitive behaviors, and obsessions. It is also treated in a similar way to OCD, and some OCD specialists are well equipped to work with perfectionism.
Symptoms of Perfectionism
What makes perfectionism unique as compared to OCD is that perfectionism is more fueled by an individual’s self-worth being overly dependent on their accomplishments and the amount of effort they perceive they are putting into their goals. Usually, perfectionism revolves around work, academics, and/or socializing, but can also affect the smallest details of one’s life, such as the way they clean or organize their house. People with perfectionism often report struggling to submit work or assignments until they “feel” perfect. They find themselves lost in small details of a project, and often procrastinate because of their understanding of how distressing engaging in work might be.
Folks with perfectionism also often come to treatment with a fear that the treatment results would be “too good” and would get rid of their drive, passion, and tenacity they have when it comes to striving for the best. The reality could be farther from the truth! Good treatment for perfectionism actually enhances productivity by helping the client understand what effort gives them a good return on investment versus is done for compulsive reasons motivated solely by the desire to reduce anxiety. Treatment helps free up productive brain space for clients, who consistently report being able to be more effective at their work upon graduating treatment.
Treatment for Perfectionism
Perfectionism is primarily treated through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy modalities such as Exposure and Response Prevention and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Treatment also targets self esteem, helping the client learn to establish a sense of self worth that is not overly tied up with minute details of their performance or evaluation.
